Queen's Diamond Jubilee

June 2012 saw the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne – her “Diamond Jubilee” – making her the second longest-serving monarch in British history.

This has huge significance: only one other monarch, Queen Victoria (total
63 years) also celebrated a Diamond Jubilee; and only four others (George III, James VI, Henry III, Edward III) lasted more than 50 years.

The celebrations included an extended Bank Holiday; a spectacular Thames river pageant, with up to 1,000 boats; and the lighting of beacons throughout the Commonwealth.
