Scrimshaw
Originally, Scrimshaw was made by whaling ship crews during the long voyages to and from the hunting grounds. They carved the most intricate of objects from whales' teeth and bones, and illustrated them with black-dyed engraved pictures. As whaling, and the trade of whale products was banned in the 20th century, the genuine article now only exists on the antique markets, worth many hundreds and even thousands of pounds.
