Not just a pretty ornament, one with a purpose. It was Torricelli who proved that atmospheric pressure is subject to variation (in 1643), and inspired Johann Goethe to devise this simple but effective barometer. When air pressure rises, suggesting better weather on the way, the level of water in the indicator tube falls: the reverse happens when air pressure falls, to indicate deteriorating conditions. If liquid spills out the top, take shelter. All you have to do is fill it with distilled water (available most pharmacies) and choose which if the colouring tablets to add: red, green, blue or yellow. Ball diameter 4", total height 8".
