The GPO introduced Model 746 as their standard rental instrument in the early 1960s. Its workings were virtually indestructible, so each time one was taken out of service, it was cleaned, tested and refitted with replacement case and cords - new outside, old inside - exactly as we've got here.
They work on the pulse dialling principal (so will not work with automated call), but are otherwise completely compatible with current telephone networks.
