Brief History: Originally built as a high altitude photo reconnaissance aircraft, the unarmed PRXIX Spitfire was fitted with a Griffon 66 engine and a pressurised cockpit, enabling it to fly at speeds of up to 370mph at 40,000 feet. PM631 was too late to see active service in WWII, and was instead issued to the 203 Advanced Flying School in 1949. After being modified for meteorological work, it was leased to Short Bros, flying from Woodvale and Hooton Park. In 1957, it was flown to Biggin Hill where it joined what would become the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). PM631 is still airworthy and is the BBMFs longest serving aircraft, having displayed for 54 years.
