This is No.1 of an originally planned edition of just 10.

However, only two were made before the recent sad events at Royal Worcester (the company was put into administration in November 2008).

The second vase was one of the last pieces completed. It was delivered to a private collector in Europe.

Specially commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Britain’s greatest naval hero, the main facets are styled after Sir William Beechy’s Nelson portrait and Wyllie's “2.30pm Battle of Trafalgar”, taking 158 hours to paint (all by hand), with each colour fired separately. Royal Worcester’s specialist gilders then applied three different types of 24ct gold to achieve the desired effect, requiring eight hours of polishing. In total, nine porcelain pieces, 11 firings and nearly 200 hours of work are required for the vase alone.

The base is also handmade, using selected pieces of oak, and a copper banding, salvaged from Nelson¹s flagship HMS Victory during refit.
