This weatherglass is a useful guide to atmospheric pressure - beautiful ornament with a genuine function. If pressure falls, the liquid in the spout rises, and if it rises far enough to spill, batten down the hatches! (Drips are caught by the bowl at the bottom.) Many assume that it must have something to do with some magical property of the liquid, but it is actually just coloured water - all part of the intrigue.
