Nantucket Style Round Basket

7745 Nantucket Style Round Basket, £14.95
Perhaps the world's most recognisable form of basketry, originated over 150 years ago by the crews of the Nantucket lightships. One of the most distinctive features of the style is the use of wooden moulds (originally the lightship masts for round baskets), resulting in a remarkable consistency of finish. The ultra close weave and solid wood bases give superb strength and durability, even compared with modern materials - the original antique items are appreciating in value. Our replicas are remarkably authentic but available at a fraction of the cost. The decorations and closures would originally have been whalebone scrimshaw; ours are hand-carved on cow bone. ROUND BASKET - basket with lid and matching handle in steam-bent walnut wood. The base is made from contrasting light coloured ash wood. Measures 4.5 x 4.5 x 3.5"
