The LNER Class A4 locomotive was designed in 1935 to be integrated into a new streamlined passenger service between London King's Cross and Newcastle. This service was called the Silver Jubilee in honour of George V's 25th year of reign. The A4 class of locomotive was also noted for its streamlined design, which not only improved its aerodynamics, thus increasing its speed capabilities, but also created an up draught to lift smoke away from the driver's vision, a problem inherent in the earlier Gresley-designed A3 locomotives. The distinctive shape made it a particularly attractive subject for artists, photographers and film-makers. The A4 Class locomotives were known affectionately by train spotters as "Streaks".

Amazingly, this Hornby 00 gauge model is powered by real steam and NOT an electric motor. Water is heated in the tender-mounted boiler (powered by electricity from the track) supplying steam to a fantastically miniaturised working steam engine which is attached to the water tender. It is possible to vary the speed and drive the locomotive in forward or reverse. The locomotive is supplied complete with operating tools including filling syringes, steam oil and gloves.

Please note: this locomotive is fitted with an NEM type coupling and is suitable for use with all 00 gauge Hornby rolling stock and track (not included).
However, it needs to run on its own track (separate from any 12V digital or analogue trains) powered by a dedicated Live Steam controller - see 98150 below. This locomotive will also work with the Flying Scotsman Live Steam set - see 96053 below.
