93123 MOVA Spinning Globe, £179.99

If you thought there was nothing new about desk globes, here's something to change your mind. Called the MOVA it’s suspended (and apparently defying gravity) within a transparent sphere that gently rotates all by itself.

The secret? A state-of-the-art micro motor inside that's powered by tiny solar cells concealed on the surface of the globe. Working equally effectively in sun or artificial light, it's beautifully detailed and comes with a rather neat acrylic tripod stand.

The globe is based on a Giovanni Maria Cassini map from 1790 that chronicles the three voyages of Captain James Cook, and it is packed with authentic detail. Completely silent in operation and quite mesmerizing to watch, the MOVA globe makes a fascinating focal point to a living room, study or office and is just about the closest thing we've seen to perpetual motion. Rather like the earth itself, in fact.

Measures 4½" diameter stands 7½" high on its stand.
