The Mille Miglia was the ultimate road race - a savagely punishing test for both car and driver. In 1938 Alfa Romeo entered four 8C 2900Bs, race-prepared by a young Enzo Ferrari (wonder what happened to him?). Although two failed to finish, the cars driven by Biondetti and Pintacuda roared home in first and second places.

Nearly 80 years later the 8C 2900B still exudes a triumphant air of speed, elegance and brio - as this 1:18 diecast model illustrates.

It's the 'Lungo' long (wheelbase) model - one of only 10 built. Open the doors and admire the grey interior, complete with functioning steering, carefully detailed dash and controls. Lift the bonnet to reveal Vittorio Jano's superb straight-8 engine in all its glorious complexity. Even the boot - with just enough room for a weekend's luggage – can be opened.

From the fabric sunroof to the photo-etched wire wheels, this is a magnificent model of a stunning car. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Length, 9½".
