7218 Ajax Figurehead, £1490.00

                ***Only 2 AVAILABLE***

When sea travel was in timber ships under sail, almost every prow had a carved figure looking down at the waves – and the variety, not surprisingly, was immense. One of the most famous was Ajax, a ferocious leader in the Trojan war. We have re-created Ajax in hand-painted glass-fibre.

Height is 66". A 'talking-point' garden ornament maybe?

Brief History

Ajax, from the 74-gun ship of that name, built in 1809, which took part in various actions of the Napoleonic Wars and converted in 1848 to steam and screw. The ship was broken up in 1864, but her figurehead is preserved in the National Museum at Greenwich.
