91519 Steiff Panda Bear, £99.99

***Limited Edition of 1,938***

In 1938 China sent five giant pandas to London Zoo. They were an immediate success drawing huge crowds, generating 'pandamania' and no doubt causing pandemonium.

Anyway to mark the event Steiff produced what was to become the model for stuffed toy pandas. And it is this original - only slightly smaller - that has been reproduced here. Made from finest mohair (surface washable), it features a squeaker, turning head and jointed limbs, hand stitching on the nose, safety eyes and hand airbrushing on the muzzle and back.

With the famous hallmark Steiff gold-plated button in its left ear, our 75th anniversary panda is one of a Limited Edition. Appropriately, only 1938 will be available worldwide.

Comes gift-boxed with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Height 10".

About Steiff Teddy Bears – Margarete was born in Giengen, Germany, in 1847. When she was 18 months old, she suffered a high fever, which resulted in her legs becoming paralysed. She also suffered pain when using her right arm. Three years later a doctor diagnosed her with Polio. She fought to lead a normal life; going to school in a handcart assisted by her siblings. Being lifted into the classroom every day and in spite of the pain in her right hand, Margarete took sewing lessons, and at 17 she finally completed her training as a seamstress.

Margarete’s father, Friedrich Steiff, a master builder, converted the family home and set up a workroom for her – a small dressmaking workshop. In 1879 Margarete was sewing pincushions shaped like a small elephant. This soon became very popular as toys for children.

In 1902 Richard Steiff (Margarete’s nephew) designed the first teddy bear with jointed arms and legs. Receiving an order for 3,000 at a trade fair, the bear enjoyed unprecedented levels of sales in the USA. From 1906 it sold under the name ‘Teddy Bear’ after Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, the US president.

In 1904, the trademark ‘Steiff’ button-in-ear was developed to fend off the vast numbers of cheap imitations.
