"No. 4" planes are the best all-round combination of size and weight, suitable for squaring-up, smoothing and shaping - the plane that most craftsmen reach for, most of the time.

This one, made by renowned US manufacturers Lie-Nielsen, has a cast bronze body, which is both heavier than usual (giving it more momentum), and won't rust (useful in a marine environment).   The blade is cryogenically-treated so that it will hone to an ultra-sharp edge more easily, and retain it for longer. It is also 3mm thick, and mounted on the famous Lie-Nielsen "bedrock" frog, to virtually eliminate chatter.

Everything about this tool is precision-engineered and it is genuinely - incomparably - better to use than a £30 DIY store job, whilst also being beautiful enough to polish and put in a display cabinet (as many people do).
