Brief History: The Swordfish was a torpedo bomber which saw active service in World War Two, despite being rather outdated by then. Built by the Fairey Aviation Company, it entered service in 1936 with both the RAF and Royal Navy, and was affectionately known as the Stringbag because it was likened to a string shopping bag that could carry just about anything! It was famous for crippling the mighty Bismarck, amongst other notable successes. Equally at home on wheels or floats which were easily interchangeable, 810 squadron Swordfish 529 operated in both configurations aboard HMS Courageous from December 1937 onwards.
