Brief History: Named after the base in Alabama where they were trained, the Tuskegee Airmen were the first group of African American pilots in the United States military, which was still racially segregated during WWII. They were most commonly associated with the Mustang P-51D, a powerful and rugged fighter which was the most successful U.S. fighter in Europe. They were painted in a very distinctive silver and red livery, leading to the nickname ‘Red Tails’, and the pilots flew with great skill and success, particularly in Europe as bomber escorts. Their story was told in a film made in 1995, and each model comes with this DVD. The Mustang model featured, ‘Duchess Arlene’, was flown by Captain Robert Williams (who later wrote the film script) and named after his wartime sweetheart.
