Nauticalia

A capstan is a vertical axis winch, used most commonly in anchoring and mooring work. Before mechanical power was available, they were driven by a team of men walking in a clockwise direction to push round the long bars leading through the top, often singing sea shanties as a means to coordinate their movements.

This stool is made in a similar style, with hefty 'rivets' and a signal flag cushion top that lifts off to reveal storage for laundry or toys.
