This is the 'lamp that lit the Empire' in the Victorian days when Birmingham brass-bashing led the world. It was called the 'Nelson' because its graceful fluted support matched the Trafalgar Square column where the naval hero's statue stands. 

The etched shade gives a soft lacy effect without spoiling the illumination.
