Brief History of RMS Titanic - On 15 April 1912, RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and sank with the loss of over 1500 lives two thirds of those on board - in one of the most deadly peacetime shipping tragedies in history. Ironically, she had set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York as the largest and most advanced passenger steamship in the world, widely billed as unsinkable.
Women & Children First was definitely the rule, with first class female passengers twelve times more likely to survive than second class males. The legends that surround the nights events, the discovery of her wreck in 1995, and the popular feature film of 1997, all contribute to the huge level of interest in Titanic.
