98100 British Army Paraffin Lantern, £139.00
For powerful, portable light where there's no mains electricity, there's still a role for liquid-fuelled lanterns: they're much brighter than battery equivalents, and the fuel is easily available even in far off places. During World War II this paraffin model, used by the British Army, was produced at the rate of 2,000 per week - and is still in use by service personnel today. It has a light output of 60W, equivalent to most domestic light bulbs, but is very economical, burning for at least ten hours on one filling of the two pint tank. The brass tank and enamelled shade won't rust, and with simple maintenance it will last pretty much forever. It's not flick-of-a-switch convenient, but if you enjoy a bit of tinkering this is an immensely satisfying bit of kit.
