Before the invention of electric lights, and even the safety match, telling the time after dark was a genuine problem. The solution was a watch that could chime out the time on demand, and the first such timepiece, which could indicate the hour and quarter hour, was patented in 1687. By 1750 the first single-minute repeater watch was in production and this complicated function is still highly sought after by watch connoisseurs today. Citizen's modern day version - paradoxically for an invention that was inspired by the dark - is powered by light (any source) with up to six months' power reserve (so you'll never have to change the battery). It's quite instinctive after listening a few times: first you get the number of hours, then the number of quarter hours elapsed, then the number of minutes after the last quarter hour mark. This watch-making masterpiece also includes a perpetual calendar, dual time zone and two alarms. Water-resistant.
