Atmospheric pressure is the single most important factor in weather forecasting, and greater accuracy in measuring it means better predictions. In this style of barometer, invented by Dutchman Christiaan Huyghens in the 17th century, the scale is 10 times larger than it would be on a conventional mercury tube, making it much easier to read so that even very slight changes in pressure become noticeable. The secret to his "multiplier scale" lay in floating alcohol on mercury, two liquids of very different densities; the only slight disadvantage being that it reads "the wrong way up" (a rise in pressure sees a fall in the indicator column) - hence "contra-barometer".
