94325 Framed Copper Plate, £149.00

Before modern paints, the only way to stop the bottom of a ship from becoming fouled with barnacles and weed was to sheath her in copper plates. These plates also deterred worms from eating the timbers - it was not unknown for unsheathed ships to become "honeycombed" (and dangerously weak) within five years of sailing to Tropical waters. Because they are up to 200 years old, have been in the sea, and were originally considered scrap (so not necessarily removed carefully), each of these plates from HMS Victory is different, but approximately the shape shown and mounted in a standard frame measuring 21x15".

Limited edition of 500, each supplied with a certificate of authenticity. 10% of proceeds from copper contributed to long term preservation of Victory.
