Designed without compromise as the ultimate supercar, the F1 was the first production car from McLaren, the Formula One race team, and it incorporated much of the technology and expertise gathered from years of racing.

In 1998, it became the fastest road car in the world, timed at 243 mph in Germany. Its 6.1 litre BMW engine produced a staggering 627 hp, and the body used many expensive materials such as Kevlar, carbon fibre and titanium – even the engine bay was lined in gold foil!

Unusually, it was a three seater, with the driver sitting in the centre. Only 65 road cars were made, which are highly prized today – making the original list price of $970,000 seem good value!
