Traditional Steam Powered Tin Boats
from £99.00
Before the age of industrial production, tin toys (but remember, we are not allowed to call them toys now!) like these were made by hand in limited production batches. This tradition has been revived by a German family who believe passionately in preserving historic standards of build and craftsmanship: if you want (and are prepared to pay for) old-fashioned quality, these are it.
The larger of the two, VICTORIA LUISE, has a full-function steam engine: you fill her boiler, light the firebox (as shown top right), then pressure builds to drive a piston that turns a shaft and the propeller underwater. She has an easily-driven, ballasted hull of approximately 2' length and 6" beam. Limited edition of 500, with numbered certificate. It's hard to imagine a better steamboat!
The smaller AFRICAN QUEEN has a simpler steam engine operated by heating water in a copper coil until it expels under pressure, at which point water is drawn back in and the cycle re-starts; similar in some ways to the drive on a jet-ski (but much more appealing of course!). "Putt-putt, putt-putt, putt-putt" she goes, across a small pool or even your bath - for about 15 minutes on one fuel cube. 13.5" long and 3.75" wide.
LIMITED EDITION of 1,000, individually certificated.
BOTH MODELS use solid fuel paraffin cubes - one pack supplied, for further supplies please see ref 96263 below.
