The loss of Titanic left almost the entire nation in mourning. To express their sympathy the toy shop Hamleys commissioned a special black mourning bear, made by Steiff of Germany, to display in their windows. Only 600 were made - many of which were quickly lost because children did not take to them - and good condition originals are now worth up to £90,000.

To commemorate this year’s centenary of the sinking, Steiff  have produced a strictly limited and very authentic replica, named Othello after one of the few remaining originals. He is identical in all aspects from the finest mohair fur, sawdust stuffing, and articulating limbs to the (highly unusual) red-rimmed glass eyes and growling sound mechanism. Standing height 19".
