90198 Stirling Engine, £139.00

This is a tiny, working, replica of Robert Stirling's 'hot air external combustion engine' - invented in Scotland in 1816. How does it work? Light the little alcohol (methylated spirit) burner and watch. Hot air expands, cold air contracts. The vacuum-chamber housed piston goes back and forth, making the flywheel whiz round. It doesn't really do anything useful, but is an absolute pleasure to watch! Measures 6x4", in gold-plate, hardwood and glass.

Customer Comments: 'I have to tell you that I have never been so delighted with anything' wrote P.J.P.M. of Cowes. 'I cannot recall the last time that I purchased something and was so impressed' said V.G.E.M.T., Amesbury.
