There is no plastic, anywhere, the box bed standard cylinder and flywheel are cast iron: the slide valve, piston connecting rod and bearings are brass: the crankshaft, crankwebbs, and piston and valve rods are steel. Even without power it is a delightful thing to hold, touch and rotate: somehow things aren't made this well any more. It is a vertical engine, originally designed to save installation area at the expense of increased height. It has a bore and stroke of .75" each, giving enough power to drive a 48" model boat for example. Height 6".
PLEASE NOTE that the boiler is sold separately to the steam engine. Each steam engine comes with a certificate of authenticity.
STEAM ENGINE KIT - Save over £170 by building it yourself. All the components are turned, threaded and milled allowing you to finish the model with no more than a set of spanners, some small files, a screwdriver and a paintbrush.
BASIC RUNNING KIT - 60psi gas-fired boiler, in line lubricator plus all the pipes and connectors you need to run the engine for 20 minutes on one fill of water. You will also need a gas cylinder (not supplied but commonly available) to connect up. (Engine not included).
ADVANCED RUNNING KIT - Everything in (97070) Basic Kit, plus a refillable gas tank in the same style as the boiler (so you don't see the gas cartridge), and a water tank and hand pump, so that you can replenish the content of the boiler as it is consumed. This will permit almost perpetual running of the engine (engine not included).
