International Code Flags were used for hundreds of years aboard ships, and before radio was invented it was common to hold entire conversations by the hoisting of two, three or even four flag signals. Individual flags are still used today in situations such as requesting customs clearance on arrival in a foreign port (letter Q). The bright colours maximised clarity from afar, and proper flags have always been made by sewing together different coloured panels for increased durability.
