Details
In 1915, the first blind veterans returned home from the war to face the enormous challenge of rebuilding their lives. In response, Sir Arthur Pearson founded the charity Blind Veterans UK, to offer support and rehabilitation to 3,000 soldiers, sailors, and airmen. That work continues today - supporting service men and women who have suffered sight loss whilst serving their country in modern conflicts.
Commissioned to Support Rehabilitation
Blind Veterans UK have commissioned this poignant bronze maquette - 'Victory Over Blindness' - the proceeds from the sale of which will help them continue their vital work. It is a 1:7 scale replica of the Johanna Domke-Guyot sculpture, based on the iconic and moving image of wounded soldiers returning from the Front in the First World War, which stands outside Manchester Piccadilly Station as a permanent memorial marking the centenary of the Charity and the end of the First World War.
Strictly limited to an edition of just 24, each maquette entails more than 600 hours of skilled craftsmanship. It is cast in bronze and mounted on a Portland stone base and is individually dedicated to a named WW1 veteran with an engraved brass plaque cast from certified WW1 artillery shells. Arrives in a bespoke wooden display cabinet with numbered certificate of authenticity. Measures 18" long and stands 8.5" tall.
As well as depicting a moving and meaningful subject, the purchase of one of these artworks will have a direct impact on the lives of blind veterans today.
