The Fairey Swordfish had a fabulous operational history and is the only aircraft that remained in service unchanged (and outlived aircraft designed to replace it) from before the war to the end of hostilities. It turned out to be perfect for carrier operations and could operate in worse weather than some other types, making it particularly successful in the Battle of the Atlantic and escorting the Arctic convoys.

It was very versatile in carrying bombs, depth charges, rockets, mines etc., hence the name ‘Stringbag’ – it seemed to be able to carry anything you asked it to – like your Gran’s old fashioned string shopping bag that always seemed to be able to grow to accommodate another pound of potatoes.

The oldest airworthy surviving Fairey Swordfish in the world, W5856 first flew on 21 October 1941, and is now restored to full flying condition as part of the Royal Navy Historic Flight.

In tribute, we have launched a very special certificated edition of just five 1:28 scale models – each hand carved from solid mahogany, painted with up to 30 coats of enamel, and displaying a wealth of authentic detail. It is accompanied by a canvas swatch from the original aircraft’s tail which was signed by the late Lieutenant Commander Bruce Vibert - a veteran Swordfish pilot of 842 Naval Air Squadron, and HMS Fencer - tasked with anti-submarine patrols in support of the Russian and Atlantic convoys in 1944. Wingspan 18”.

A 5% (£30) donation from the sale of this item has been donated to the Fly Navy Heritage Trust to help keep historically important naval aircraft flying.
