Details
The last of Admiral Lord Nelson’s frigates, HMS Trincomalee is Britain’s oldest warship still afloat. She was built in Bombay, India, from teak due to the oak shortages in Britain that resulted from the shipbuilding drives for the Napoleonic Wars, and named Trincomalee after the 1782 Battle of Trincomalee off the Ceylon port of that name. Having been retired from active service in 1857, she finished her naval career as a training and accommodation ship before being sold for scrap in 1897. Fortunately, she has been fully restored and now resides in Hartlepool as a part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) where she welcomes 50,000 visitors each year.
We have commissioned this model to celebrate the bicentenary of her launch, on 12 October 1817, and will donate a royalty from the sales to the NMRN towards their work to preserve our maritime heritage. Our model measures 8" in length.
