Details
Nelson was partial to a drop of the hard stuff. And after a busy day harrying the French, his favourite tipple was gin - but only of the finest quality. Which is why, when the Isle of Wight Distillery produced a truly outstanding gin, they called it after the Admiral’s flagship. Of course with a name like HMS Victory, the spirit’s maritime credentials had to be impeccable. That’s why it’s distilled to 57%abv, which would have been the strength demanded by the Navy in Nelson’s time. And to ensure that the barrels loaded aboard contained gin that hadn’t been watered down, a few drops were splashed onto gunpowder. If the powder could still be ignited, the gin was ‘Navy Strength’ and suitable for serving in the wardroom. Dry, slightly peppery, with a high concentration of botanical oils, intense flavour and aroma, HMS Victory is a gin to savour when the sun’s over the yardarm. Perfect with tonic, ice and a slice, or tinged with Angostura bitters for a classic pink gin. Raise your glasses to the spirit of Nelson! 70cl.

Designed by Sir Thomas Slade and launched in 1765 she was the ultimate Georgian warship, armed with 102 guns plus two carronades in the fo’c’sle, she displaced approximately 3,500 tons and carried a crew of about 850.
