Details
What an extraordinary aircraft the Fairey Swordfish turned out to be! Originating in the 1930s, her wood and canvas construction was already considered outdated at the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, yet she outlived several types intended to replace her - serving, virtually unchanged, in all theatres throughout the war. A carrier-based torpedo bomber, the Swordfish operated initially as a fleet attack aircraft, earning major honours at Taranto and in the sinking of the Bismarck, but also achieved great success in anti-submarine and reconnaissance duties.
This documentary tells the story of W5856, currently the world’s oldest airworthy Fairey Swordfish. Built in 1941, she entered service with the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet and remained in civilian use after the war.
In 1990, British Aerospace bought W5856 in order to restore and present her to the Royal Navy Historic Flight at Yeovilton. The company also produced this film as a record of the aircraft’s remarkable 26-month restoration at its Brough factory. It shows the work carried out by a team of dedicated individuals to achieve this feat, returning the aircraft to the skies in 1993.
Now in the colours of 820 Naval Air Squadron (1941), and cared for by the Fly Navy Heritage Trust, W5856 is a highlight of air shows throughout the country, where she helps tell the story of British naval aviation.
Running time 60mins approx. All regions.
