Details
Our Saloon Porthole Range of clocks, barometers and tide clocks have hefty solid cast brass casings, scuttle clamps, bevelled glass fronts and brass hands with black subsidiary indicators on light cream faces. The movements are good quality - battery-operated quartz for the clocks and silvered aneroid for the barometers. Clocks have bold Roman numerals and use one AA battery. Barometers have stainless steel aneroid movements showing millibars and inches of mercury. Tide Clocks are influenced by the orbit of the moon around the Earth. To show this, our tide clock has an extra hand, which makes a complete sweep at the lunar rate of approximately 12.5 hours instead of the normal 12. (Please note: because the lunar cycle varies with the Earth's, there are times in a month when actual tides are a few minutes ahead or behind the clock). Outside diameter 9", face diameter 5.5", depth 2.25". GREAT OFFER! SAVE £50 when you buy our Saloon Clock (ref:7101) and Barometer (ref:7100). Our pocket weather forecaster, see ref:4642 below, helps interpret your barometer and create accurate local weather forecasts. (UK only).

Brass
Brass - an alloy of copper and zinc - is easy to work with, can be polished to a gleaming shine, and it has a high degree of corrosion resistance, making it the traditional choice of metal for use in harsh marine environments.

Quartz Movement
Quartz (silicon dioxide) crystals possess the remarkable property of oscillating at a very regular and predictable frequency when subjected to an electrical current. The first commercially available clocks to exploit this appeared in the late 1920s, and went on to supersede mechanical movements thanks to their accuracy and reduced need for maintenance.

Tide Clock
Tide clocks provide an at-a-glance indication by means of an additional hand that takes approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes to go 'round the clock'. Because the lunar cycle varies in length day by day, but is constant over a cycle of 28 days, there will be times when the tide indicator varies by a few minutes ahead of or behind the actual tides.
